The EPBC 2022 is offering the following Pre-Conference Workshops. Please note, the workshops are not included in the conference registration and delegates need to register for them in addition to attending the conference.

Workshop #1

Centre for Crisis & Risk Communications - Crisis & Risk Communications with Benjamin Morgan, M.A

Date: Monday, November 7 / Cost: CAD $100 / Full day 8:30 am – 4:00 pm 

Description of the workshop: We are pleased to welcome the Centre for Crisis & Risk Communications and one of Canada’s leading crisis & risk communication practitioners, Benjamin Morgan. During crises (high concern / high-stress situations), having a comprehensive and functioning communication strategy and plan in place that is based on sound crisis and risk communication principles and scientific research can make a significant difference in maintaining your organization's stakeholder confidence.  In this 1-day workshop, you will learn how to effectively and ethically communicate during crisis and risk situations - an important result of skilled communications will be enhanced personal and corporate credibility.  During this interactive workshop, Benjamin will offer his insights, knowledge, and experiences into the science and art of crisis & risk communications.

Specifically, you will gain a greater understanding of: 

  • the fundamental importance of building trust and credibility,
  • how to identify specific audiences and target messages, 
  • public perceptions of risk and how to recognize and respond to them, 
  • how emotions affect comprehension,   
  • how crisis & risk communications can improve your overall risk management program,
  • the media, it's needs, and how to help get your message reported successfully, 
  • how ethical risk communication can be used to enhance credibility,

About Benjamin Morgan: Benjamin spent 16 years serving community as an Advanced Life Support Paramedic. During his years of service, he held the role of Public Education Officer with the City of Calgary Emergency Medical Services. It was in this role that Benjamin discovered a passion for communications. He returned to academic studies and completed a Master’s Degree in Professional Communications at Royal Roads University. Upon completion of his degree, Benjamin returned to the City of Calgary in a newly created position, Supervisor Crisis Communications. In this role, he was responsible for municipal risk, crisis, and issues communication. During this period, Benjamin was accountable for municipal communications during the 2013 Calgary Floods. As a volunteer member of Canada Task Force 2, he was deployed to Fort McMurray where we managed local communications during the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires. During both of these events, Benjamin worked with provincial and federal governments, coordinating communications and hosted Premiere and Prime Minister press conferences. In 2019, Benjamin founded the Centre for Crisis & Risk Communications. The Centre is supported by an advisory board which includes world-leading crisis & risk communication authority, Dr. Vincent Covello and North America’s leading academic researcher and professor, Dr. Timothy Coombs. Benjamin’s work is grounded in the science and research of Dr. Covello and Dr. Coombs. The Centre for Crisis & Risk Communications has supported several Canadian Municipalities through crisis communication plan development, training, coaching, and event support. The Centre supports not-for-profit and corporate organizations through crisis & risk communication planning, coaching, and execution. Benjamin and the Centre are pleased to have supported Lilloett, B.C. during the 2021 wildfire season, and the City of Merritt as recovery from the 2021 atmospheric river event continues. Benjamin is associate faculty at Royal Roads University where he teaches Crisis & Risk Communications in the Master of Arts, Disaster and Emergency Management.

DRI Canada BCA 100 - Business Continuity Awareness

Date: Monday, November 7 / Cost: CAD $400 / Full day 8:30 am - 4:00 pm

Description of the course: This course is designed for individuals who want to know more about business continuity planning and gain an understanding of the concepts of designing, developing, and implementing a business continuity program. It is fast-paced with minimal time for practicing the concepts but a great overview of the 10 professional practices and glossary of terms for the business continuity program.
